Project Background

The Region of Durham has funded the Durham Community Action Group (DCAG) to host a youth-led and youth-focused event addressing the issue of community violence.

Since February of 2024, a group of youth from across the Durham Region, commonly referred to as the Youth Action Group (YAG), have been meeting regularly to plan, develop, and launch an event promoting anti-violence.

For months, these youth have been working diligently on this project and have decided upon an event with the slogan of “Happy Beatz Peaceful Streets” – signifying the use of art to promote anti-violence.

On August 1st, in conjunction with the Region’s Emancipation Day Event, the YAG will host an Art Exhibition to engage youth and display artwork by young artists with an anti-violence message. Aside from the exhibition, there will be a Youth DJ playing music as well as free food, drinks and frozen treats.

The event will have various stations to visit such as informational booths, a healing circle, and an art corner that will have tie-dye and other fun activities!
